ART STYLES AND

THEIR AUDIENCES

KATIE LEDGERWOOD

Information / Reference title > aimed at 9-11 years olds.
The art style that I have chosen for this is 'Photorealism'. I think that this style would work well for this genre as if it is an informative book then it will be based on true facts so the images/illustrations will need to be factual to support these. I also think 9-11 year olds will be less interested in a childish cartoon style so I think a more realistic style would work better. Photorealism is often created through drawing and then painting. I think the important factors for a art style for this genre is making sure the images are realistic to the topic of the book.

This shows an example of photo realism-

Picture book > aimed at 3-6 year olds.
The art style that I think would suit this genre is a 'Whimsical style' which is a playful style and mostly associated with children books especially fairy tales. I think this style is well suited to the genre as a picture book is predominately pictures so they have to be engaging to the children to keep their interest in the book. As the whimsical style is often brightly coloured and has a fun element to it and a child like look it, I think children would find it quite interesting and engaging to look at.  I think for this genre it is important to make the illustrations brightly coloured and appealing to children.

This shows an example of the whimsical style-

Baby / Toddler > First Objects Book.

The art style that I think would work best for this is a 'Cartoon' style as it is a very brightly coloured style of art, which I think would be bast for a baby/toddler as it bright and fun and I think this would engage the audience. It is proven that colours can stimulate a baby brain and body so I think having lots of colour is important for this genre. I also think that a 'cartoon' style is appropriate for this genre as a cartoon can be very animated which again I think would engage a toddler/babies interest.
