CHILDRENS

ILLUSTRATORS

LAUREN CHILD

Lauren Child is an English writer and illustrator for mostly children's books. She is best known for he work on Charlie and Lola, Clarice Bean series of books and Ruby Redford. She won the Kate Greenaway medal for one of the books she illustrated which was 'I will not ever never eat a tomato' from the Charlie and Lola series, she won for the most 'distinguished illustration in a book for children'.

I have chosen to research Lauren Child's work because I think it has a unique style to it and it almost looks like a child has drawn it, so I think children can relate to that well. I also like the use of typography and how she positions it on the page in a much more interesting manner. For example in the picture below all of the text is positioned in a different way, there are no straight lines of text. I think this makes it more interesting and engaging for children to look at. I think this makes the typography part of the image instead if it being text and illustrations as two separate things. I also like how see keeps the same style of drawing across all the books that she illustrates, for example 'Charlie and Lola' and 'Who's afraid of the big bad book' are very much illustrated in the same style. I think again this makes it more memorable and recognisable for children.

I think Lauren's art style is quite child-like and very simple sketchy drawings. I like the simplicity of her drawings as it gives a relatable style to children. This style is more noticeable in the Charlie and lola books, the Clarice Bean books and Who's afraid of the big bad book book. She also changes her style for the 'Ruby Redford' books, in these books she has more of a detailed style and almost pop art like. They are also all mostly black and white which is the opposite if the Charlie and Lola style illustrations as they are mostly quite colourful.

think Lauren Child's target age range could be different for each of her books. I think Charlie and Lola, Clarice Bean would be targeted at a more younger audience maybe 4 to 7, whereas I think Ruby Redford would be a older target audience maybe 10- 11 upwards. I think this because 'Ruby Redford' is an actual reading book so younger children wouldn't be able to read it properly, its more of a book that a child would go off and read by them self when they are capable of reading properly. Whereas Charlie and Lola is more of a picture book and the sort of book the child's parent would read to them.
